Video selection: Perfect Escapism
Solipsist
Andrew Huang: "Solipsist" (USA, 2012)
It is almost impossible to describe this video without seeing it for yourself. Clusters of improbable, plankton like creatures are born out of the merging of two fantastical women, who gently sprout feathers, multicoloured worms and scaly appendages. Two men stand a duel, only to lose their faces in sand, which drains away from their faces. The rightful winner of the special Jury prize at this year’s Slamdance festival.
The Wonder Hospital
Beombik Shimbe Shim: "The Wonder Hospital" (USA/South Korea, 2010)
A perturbed inpatient nervously awaits his appointment with a cosmetic surgeon. As he waits, the hospital becomes increasingly empty and disturbingly quiet. A labyrinth of corridors lead to his rendez-vous, but the results of his surgery are not what was expected. A superb feast for the imagination.
Electronic Performers
A.Ganzerli, L.Bourdoiseau, J.Blanquet: "Electronic Performers, with Air soundtrack" (France, 2004)
An old favourite and classic music video opus, which still stands the test of time eight years later. The pared-back style of this monochromatic 3D animation perfectly matches the slow build of the Air track, where a sperm-like cell fights its way to the egg in order to reach its biological conclusion.
Knife, by Grizzly Bear
Encyclopedia Pictura: "Knife, by Grizzly Bear" (USA, 2007)
A trip into the recesses of the confused mind, Knife should be watched with wide-open eyes and a quiet, unquestioning brain. A man endowed with an impressive forehead observes a human-powered, meat mincing machine in the middle of the US desert. As they sink into the sand, a man made of stones emerges from the dust to revive him, whereupon his body begins to swell.
Hayling, by FC Kahuna
Lynn Fox: "Hayling, by FC Kahuna" (UK, 2002)
Created before the advent of HD and none the worse for it, Hayling is a musical journey and organic love story set beneath the waves. Two anemone-like sea creatures dance in seduction, intertwining and spawning when their performance is complete.
